Need to turn cups to gallons? Type the number of cups into the converter above and the gallons appear as you type, with any leftover cups spelled out underneath. Divide by 16, or multiply by 0.0625, and you have the answer. Going the other way, from gallons to cups, has its own gallons to cups converter. This page adds a long chart of cup amounts, a method for partial cups, and a shopping rule for party-sized batches.
One US cup is 0.0625 gallon, or 1/16 of a gallon. Is that gallons per cup or cups per gallon? The two are mirror images: gallons per cup is 0.0625, cups per gallon is 16, so the cup-to-gallon ratio is 16 to 1. Cups are the small unit, which is why the gallon number is always the smaller one. This converter assumes the standard US cup; how other cup sizes and gallon types change the count is explained in our guide to how many cups are in a gallon.
How do you convert cups into gallons? Divide the cups by 16.
Gallons = Cups ÷ 16
Gallons = Cups × 0.0625
For a quick mental version, halve the cups four times: 40 → 20 → 10 → 5 → 2.5 gallons.
When a result is not a whole gallon, subtract 16s until fewer than 16 cups remain. Take 84 cups: five 16s use up 80, leaving 4, so 84 cups is 5 gallons 4 cups (5.25 gallons). In the same way 52 cups is 3 gallons 4 cups, and 30 cups is 1 gallon 14 cups (1.875 gallons). The converter prints this breakdown under the result for whole numbers.
Fractions work the same way. To turn 0.667 cups into gallons, 0.667 ÷ 16 = 0.0416875 gallon. Two thirds of a cup, 2/3, comes to 0.0416667 gallon, and 2 1/2 cups is 2.5 ÷ 16 = 0.15625 gallon. Enter a decimal, a fraction like 2/3, a mixed number, or a character such as ½.
Every row is cups ÷ 16. The last column shows the answer as whole gallons plus leftover cups.
