Need to turn quarts to gallons in a hurry? Type the number of quarts into the converter above and the result updates as you type: every 4 US quarts make exactly 1 gallon, so you divide by 4. Going the other way? Use the gallons to quarts converter. Further down you will find the formula, worked examples with leftover quarts, a chart of common amounts, and how US, dry and imperial quarts differ.
One US liquid quart is 0.25 gallon, a quarter of a gallon. It is exact by definition, not a rounded figure: the liquid gallon is 231 cubic inches, the liquid quart is 57.75 cubic inches, and 57.75 ÷ 231 = 0.25. NIST lists both values in Appendix C of Handbook 44. So 4 quarts = 1 gallon, 2 quarts = half a gallon, and 1 quart is also 2 pints or 32 fluid ounces. For the smaller units, the quart to oz converter does the ounce math, and the liquid measurement conversion chart lists cups, pints, quarts and gallons together.
Gallons = Quarts ÷ 4
Gallons = Quarts × 0.25
Dividing by 4 and multiplying by 0.25 are the same operation. For a whole number of quarts the answer ends in .00, .25, .5 or .75, so it never needs more than two decimal places.
Divide the quarts by 4: 2 quarts ÷ 4 = 0.5 gallon, 5 quarts ÷ 4 = 1.25 gallons, 10 quarts ÷ 4 = 2.5 gallons, 12 quarts ÷ 4 = 3 gallons and 20 quarts ÷ 4 = 5 gallons.
Recipes and containers often use gallons and quarts instead of a decimal. Divide by 4: the whole number is the gallons and the remainder is the leftover quarts. For 35 quarts, 35 ÷ 4 is 8 with 3 left over, so 35 quarts is 8 gallons 3 quarts, or 8.75 gallons. Likewise 58 quarts is 14 gallons 2 quarts, or 14.5 gallons. The converter shows this breakdown under the result whenever you enter a whole number.
Partial quarts follow the same rule. 1.5 quarts ÷ 4 = 0.375 gallon, and 2 1/2 quarts is 2.5 ÷ 4 = 0.625 gallon. You can type a decimal, a fraction such as 1/2, a mixed number such as 2 1/2, or a character such as ½.
Every row is quarts ÷ 4. The last column splits each answer into gallons and leftover quarts.

Can't find your number? Break it into rows you can find. For 100 quarts, add 64 quarts (16 gallons) and 36 quarts (9 gallons) to get 25 gallons.
Quarts are common on pots, coolers and bottles, while gallons are how bigger jobs and bulk prices are quoted. A few everyday cases where quarts to gallons conversions help:
This converter uses the US liquid quart, the unit behind American recipes, jugs and automotive fluids. A US dry quart is larger, at 67.2006 cubic inches against 57.75 for the liquid quart, so the two should not be swapped. The imperial system keeps the 4-to-1 rule, since 4 imperial quarts make 1 imperial gallon, but both units are bigger: an imperial quart is about 1.1365 litres, while a US quart is about 0.9464. Mixing systems gives wrong answers. For example, 4 US quarts come to only about 0.83 of an imperial gallon.
