Need to turn gallons to cups in a hurry? Enter your amount in the converter above and the answer appears as you type, along with the same volume in quarts, pints and fluid ounces. The math takes one step: a US gallon is exactly 16 cups, so multiply by 16. Below you will find the formula, answers for common amounts such as 2, 4 and 8 gallons, two charts, and a note on which kind of cup a recipe means.
There are 16 cups in a US gallon. So, does 16 cups equal 1 gallon? Yes, and the relationship is exact. NIST lists the liquid gallon as 231 cubic inches and the liquid pint as 28.875 cubic inches in Appendix C of Handbook 44. That makes 8 pints per gallon, and a cup is half a pint, so one gallon is 16 cups and one cup is 1/16 gallon (0.0625 gal).
A gallon of water is 16 cups, and a gallon of milk is 16 cups too. Cups measure volume, so the count is the same for every liquid, and only the weight differs. If a recipe lists fluid ounces instead, the oz to cups converter bridges the two.
How do you convert gallons into cups? Multiply the number of gallons by 16.
Cups = Gallons × 16
Gallons = Cups ÷ 16
Because 16 is a power of two, results are exact. Mentally, just double the gallons four times.
Fractions follow the same rule. Half a gallon is 0.5 × 16 = 8 cups, 1.5 gallons is 24 cups, and 2 1/2 gallons is 2.5 × 16 = 40 cups. For one third of a gallon, 16 ÷ 3 gives 5 1/3 cups (about 5.3333).
Every row is gallons × 16. The fluid ounces column helps with labels, since 1 cup is 8 fluid ounces.

This single chart covers the whole US liquid ladder. Read along a row to see how much of each other unit one gallon, quart, pint or cup contains.
| 1 of this unit | Gallons | Quarts | Pints | Cups | Fluid ounces |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 gallon | 1 | 4 | 8 | 16 | 128 |
| 1 quart | 0.25 | 1 | 2 | 4 | 32 |
| 1 pint | 0.125 | 0.5 | 1 | 2 | 16 |
| 1 cup | 0.0625 | 0.25 | 0.5 | 1 | 8 |
For a single step, the gallons to pints converter works the same way with a factor of 8. The liquid measurement conversion chart adds tablespoons and teaspoons.
Cups are the unit of recipes and serving sizes, while gallons describe the bulk container. A few everyday questions where gallons to cups conversions come up:
This converter uses the US customary cup, which is 8 fluid ounces or about 236.6 millilitres. Other cups give a slightly different count per gallon:
| Kind of cup | Size | Cups in 1 US gallon |
|---|---|---|
| US customary cup (this page) | about 236.6 mL | 16 |
| US nutrition-label cup | 240 mL | about 15.77 |
| Metric cup | 250 mL | about 15.14 |
The 240 mL figure comes from the FDA's rules for nutrition labeling, while 250 mL cups are common in recipes from countries such as Australia. The gallon matters too: an imperial gallon is about 19.2 US cups, and a US dry gallon is larger than the liquid one, at roughly 18.6 liquid cups. For everyday US cooking and any gallon of liquid, use 16.
