Need to turn gallons to pints in a hurry? Type your amount into the converter above and the result updates as you type, along with the same volume in quarts, cups and fluid ounces. The rule is simple: every US gallon holds exactly 8 pints, so you multiply by 8. Below you will find the formula, worked examples, a chart of everyday amounts, and a note on how US, dry and imperial pints differ.
A US liquid gallon holds 8 pints. The definition settles it: a liquid gallon is 231 cubic inches, a liquid pint is 28.875 cubic inches, and 231 ÷ 28.875 = 8. Both figures come from Appendix C of NIST's Handbook 44. So 1 gal = 8 pt, 1 pt = 0.125 gal, and each pint is 2 cups or 16 fluid ounces. If quarts suit your recipe better, the gallons to quarts converter works the same way with a factor of 4.
Pints = Gallons × 8
Gallons = Pints ÷ 8
The factor is a whole number, so every result is exact. To do it mentally, double the gallons three times.
Multiply by 8: 2 gallons × 8 = 16 pints, 3 gallons × 8 = 24 pints, 5 gallons × 8 = 40 pints, and 10 gallons × 8 = 80 pints. At the larger end, 50 gallons come to 400 pints.
Decimals follow the same rule: 0.5 gallon × 8 = 4 pints, 1.25 gallons × 8 = 10 pints, and 2.5 gallons × 8 = 20 pints. With fractions, multiply the top number by 8 and divide by the bottom: 3/4 gallon is (3 × 8) ÷ 4 = 6 pints, and 1/3 gallon is 8 ÷ 3, or 2 2/3 pints (about 2.6667). You can type any of these formats into the converter.
Every row is gallons × 8. The cups column is there for recipes, since 1 pint is 2 cups.

Missing from the tables? Add rows together. For 35 gallons, add 30 gallons (240 pints) and 5 gallons (40 pints) to get 280 pints. For other units in one place, see the liquid measurement conversion chart.
Gallons are for bulk volumes, while pints show up on cartons, jars and serving sizes. Two everyday cases:
One caution about wording: a label such as “1 pint per gallon” is a mixing ratio, not a unit conversion. For 5 gallons of mixture at that ratio you would need 5 pints, not 40.
This converter uses the US liquid pint, which is the unit on American recipes and cartons. A US dry pint is a different, larger measure of about 33.6 cubic inches, so dry and liquid pints should not be swapped. The imperial system also counts 8 pints to the gallon, but its pint is about 568 millilitres against roughly 473 for the US pint, so the two gallons are different sizes: one imperial gallon is about 9.6 US pints.
