Need to turn pints to gallons in a hurry? Enter the number of pints in the converter above and the result updates as you type: every 8 US pints make exactly 1 gallon, so you divide by 8. Working the other direction? Try the gallons to pints converter. Below you will find the formula, worked examples with leftover pints, a chart of everyday amounts, and a note on how US, dry and imperial pints differ.
One US liquid pint is 0.125 gallon, which is one eighth of a gallon. Dividing the pint's 28.875 cubic inches by the gallon's 231 gives exactly 0.125, so 1 pt = 1/8 gal. NIST publishes both sizes in Appendix C of Handbook 44. In other words, 8 pints = 1 gallon, 4 pints = half a gallon, and 1 pint is also 2 cups or 16 fluid ounces. For the ounce side of that, the pint to oz converter does the math.
Gallons = Pints ÷ 8
Gallons = Pints × 0.125
Dividing by 8 and multiplying by 0.125 are the same operation. For a whole number of pints the answer has at most three decimal places, because each extra pint adds 0.125 gallon.
Divide the pints by 8: 4 pints ÷ 8 = 0.5 gallon, 6 pints ÷ 8 = 0.75 gallon, 10 pints ÷ 8 = 1.25 gallons, 16 pints ÷ 8 = 2 gallons, 24 pints ÷ 8 = 3 gallons and 40 pints ÷ 8 = 5 gallons.
Containers are often easier to read as gallons and pints than as a decimal. Divide by 8, keep the quotient as gallons and read the remainder as pints. For 35 pints, 35 ÷ 8 is 4 with 3 left over, so 35 pints is 4 gallons 3 pints, or 4.375 gallons. Likewise 70 pints is 8 gallons 6 pints, or 8.75 gallons. Enter a whole number and the converter prints this breakdown beneath the result.
Partial pints work the same way. A half pint is 0.5 ÷ 8 = 0.0625 gallon, 1.5 pints is 0.1875 gallon, and 2 1/2 pints is 2.5 ÷ 8 = 0.3125 gallon. The converter also accepts these as 0.5, 1/2, 2 1/2 or ½.
Every row is pints ÷ 8. The last column splits each answer into gallons and leftover pints.

Missing from the tables? Add rows together. For 150 pints, add 100 pints (12.5 gallons) and 50 pints (6.25 gallons) to get 18.75 gallons.
Pints are the size of cartons, jars and single servings, while gallons describe the bulk quantity. A couple of everyday cases where pints to gallons conversions help:
Everything on this page assumes US liquid measures. A US dry pint is a separate, larger measure of about 33.6 cubic inches, which works out to roughly 0.145 liquid gallon, so dry and liquid pints are not interchangeable. British recipes and pubs also use 8 pints per gallon, yet the imperial pint holds about 568 millilitres, while the US pint holds roughly 473. As a result, one US pint is only about 0.104 of an imperial gallon. The full comparison is in US pint vs UK pint.
